Before you read this, I must tell you it is a bit slow in beginning but trust me, If you want your typical OP MC killing people left and right, or breaking through five realms in one power up, bedded the greatest beauty in all the lands, and having the current Emperor bow down to him in defeat ALL before chapter 20, don’t come here. If you want a harem of girls falling all over themselves to sleep with him, don’t read this. If you want fast paced action and a brainless read you can finish on the toilet, don’t touch SOTR. If you do want solid world building, fantastic side character exploration where the sidekicks are more than a piece of paper, political intrigue, fights in which the MC uses his wits as often as he uses force, and complicated relationships, then DO read SOTR. I say this as someone who had hate read this atrocity of a fiction to the very end. To the horrible fricking end. But let's break it down. At the beginning it doesn't seem that bad. The mysterious teacher + a disgraced genius cliche. Let's ignore the whole isekai thing since that is there literally only for the tag and has a screen time of about 2 sentences in over 1600 chapters. We get introduced to the concept of the so called heavenly flames and how MC is going to search for them in order to get big power boosts. We also learn that MC is ridiculously talented in alchemy and martial arts, but that is pretty standard in this kind of story. So the first 100 chapters pass and it seems even above average, if you ignore that the author is sexists like a 16th century monarch and that MC is in a relationship yet still has time to molest his older cousin. But then you realise that you have already read the entire story. Form then on everything is just a reskin. I am being serious...

Another intresting turn tr*sh novel... the three things which are seriously wrong with this novel 1) ego... egoist... egotist... anything related to these words is frankly like an ant compared to the MC's hoola laala... This used to be one of my favorite novels. A hundred chapters ago I would have given it a 4 out of 5. In the first two hundred chapters I would have given it a 5 out of 5. I would absolutely recommend this to anybody who likes xianxia though. It isn't high-quality, but the beginning world-building is great and original. This is a standard xianxia with a setting that feels different from the usual sects or isolated mountain village that most xianxia start with. The author does a great job of making a new world for his run-of-the-mill cultivator reincarnation story. Plus, the pacing is consistently good. Even later, when the story starts to get weak, the author avoids lingering on any particular event or battle for too long, and always keeps a clear short-term motivation for the MC. TDG start is engaging for me. The main character (MC) - Nie Li - is reincarnated as his teenage self (his consciousness travels back in time). The MC realizes he now gets a second chance in life. This is a well thought out and brilliant story and has villains that actually uses their brains which I found to be quite refreshing. But the absolute highlight of this story is the protagonist and whether you will actually like this novel or hate it entirely depends on whether you will like the protagonist. The reason for that is while this novel has does do a decent job of portraying the various side characters, The story completely revolves around the MC (who is average in looks and has below average magical aptitude and has no other remarkable qualities except for his superior intelligence and cunning) and his pursuit of immortality. And since the MC is definitely not the sentimental type he just passes through these side characters with just a passing acquaintance except for one or two that actually manages to leave a lasting impression on him. *Warning* This is a pretty meaty review so here's a TL:DR for those who don't feel like reading all of it: - The story has boring dialogues, and side characters that drink the kool aid from the MC's d*ck every moment they get. And most if not all of them are there to work as a fix-it-all for everything the MC might need, so he has no need to lift a finger himself. There's a complete lack of personality in every character in the story, except for maybe the Crown Prince. There's no crisis', no impending doom, no sense of loss, and nothing to drive the MC to improve himself or others. I've contemplated dropping the novel around 20~ times give or take, but I stuck with it. It's definitely a fun experience; there's a decent amount of humor, some epic moments, and it's probably the best you're gonna get of MMORPG-like novels at the moment. However, that isn't exactly praise of the highest order. I didn't mind Grid's character as some other readers had, be that before his transformation or after. What bothered me, however, was the transformation itself -- it completely abandons the concept of show-don't-tell, since every other chapter either some side character or the author himself through omniscient perspective will clamor about how much Grid has changed. If you're looking for a novel with horrible romance, bromance, asspulls, plot holes, characters and general view on women (along with a lot of other things), but fast pace on the revenge and pretty much bloodshed along with a retardedly reckless MC with a lot of hypocrisy and double morals that manages to cause everyone he walks by to want to kill him as if he had used an entire can of axe on himself (only to get killed shortly thereafter after a nonsensical and illogical development), then you've come to the right place. I came to this novel after reading its manhwa adaptation. I love the manhwa... but reading it until the end of the novel, there were a few points wherein I was disappointed. Still, the manhwa is cool. What reasons to like 1. The MC - now I know that there are some who don’t like the MC, but I like how his character was developed. Since I didn’t start to read the beginning through this novel but through the manhwa, I definitely loved how the MC’s courage was developed. The account of what happened before he acquired his special levelling powers; I felt goosebumps while reading that part, honestly. I was able to embrace and sympathise with his fears at the beginning to the point wherein I celebrated when he faced his fears and overcame.
